Named after its colour, it is often cracked and usually a little turbid.  Crystals with flat faces have been found only in the last few years.  Colour can fade.  Traces of rutile needles cause six rayed stars when cut en cabochon.  Brazil is the largest supplier, while the best quality comes from the Malagasy Republic.
