Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride.  The word is derived from the Latin root fluo, meaning “to flow” – the mineral has a relatively low melting point and was used as an important flux in smelting.  It is a widely occurring mineral, found in large deposits in many areas, including Europe, Mexico, and Canada.
