From the Latin “carn” for “flesh”, comes the word Carnelian meaning “flesh coloured chalcedony”. It can be a pastel, apricot or peach tint, a bright red-orange or a lively true flesh colour. Carnelian nodules are coloured by iron oxides and are sometimes mottled or colour-zoned. Carnelian is a popular carving material.
