Agate formed 150 million years ago when gas bubbles trapped in solidifying lava became filled with alkali and silica-bearing waters, which coagulated into a gel. Bands formed in this gel, which then solidified and when cut in cross-section, many agates reveal striking coloured patterns. Some agate is dyed – a centuries old craft which is still common today. This agate bookend is dyed.
