Amethyst is the most highly valued stone in the quartz group.  It can be found all over the world (even, occasionally, in the basalt rocks of Scotland) but the main deposits are in Brazil.   The name comes from the Greek meaning “not drunken” and Amethyst was worn as an amulet against drunkenness
