Product Description

Agate formed 150 million years ago when gas bubbles trapped in solidifying lava became filled with alkali and silica-bearing waters, which coagulated into a gel.  Bands formed in this gel, which then solidified and when cut in cross-section, many agates reveal striking coloured patterns.  Some agate is dyed – a centuries old craft which is still common today.

A geode is a cavity in a rock which is lined with quartz crystals projecting towards its centre.  The name comes from the Greek word Geoides, which means “earthlike” and they can be found all over the world. Areas with the most geodes, however, tend to be deserts, volcanic ash beds, or areas with plentiful limestone.
